Is This The Bronx’s Future? Displaced, Dispersed, Disappeared: What Happens to Families Forced Out of Bushwick?

Coming Soon: Bushwick…If We Let It.

The following is syndicated from CityLimits and is very appropriate and applicable to The Bronx as signs of gentrification continue to manifest itself in the South Bronx. Is this what Bronx residents have to look forward to as developers are given free reign by our politicians to come into our neighborhoods and development with rampant disregard?

New York City has become a sterile, cookie-cutter “suburban” city. Neighborhoods in Manhattan and many parts of Brooklyn no longer have a distinct character or are losing them and becoming more homogeneous. Is this what we really want to happen to The Bronx?

Special Harlem River Waterfront District Visioning Session: Real Grassroots Planning Or Just Business As Usual?

On Tuesday, May 5th, the South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation—better known as SoBro—held a “second” visioning session on the Special Harlem River Waterfront District to discuss the issues of developing the waterfront, residential, needs, and gentrification issues.

The reason I say second in quotes is because SoBro held a block party last year where they had a small station in a corner where they collected surveys about the waterfront yet that was never heavily promoted. Many residents were unaware that a “first” session had occurred.

Will Mott Haven Become The Next Williamsburg? We Sure Hope Not

DNAinfo published a piece yesterday that pretty much hyped up the area’s prospects of pending gentrification much to our chagrin.

Unlike a recent piece on Melrose which focuses on revitalization, this piece is more on the pro-gentrification side which will cause much displacement of long time residents.

Right now, rents are so high in the area that those living in rent stabilized unit wouldn’t be able to afford moving in at this point in time.

It also goes on to talk about a lot of what we’ve been reporting in the area about speculative purchases, etc and the money that’s been pouring in.

ReThinkNYC’s Ambitious Regional Plan Seeks to Expand La Guardia Airport Into The Bronx—Well Sort Of

ReThinkNYC has submitted a massive regional proposal to improve access to La Guardia Airport (LGA) as part of a competition to modernize NYC’s 4 area airports in which the winner would fetch a $500,000 prize.

In short, the proposal seeks to essentially wipe out about half of the existing Port Morris neighborhood east of the RFK Bridge and adding a convention center, parking, terminals and rail links straight into an expanded La Guardia Airport that would take over Riker’s Island as well.

WALLWORKS NEW YORK Official Gallery Launch This Saturday

After a soft launch this past September and with several exhibitions since then, WALLWORKS NEW YORK in Port Morris will officially launch their gallery tomorrow, Saturday, January 10th at 6PM with the exhibition ‘Ikonoclasts’ featuring the works of the late trio of graff artists, A-One, Dondi, and Rammellzee.

When we first interviewed Crash, aka John Matos last year, he told us about his vision for WALLWORKS:

Surprise! The Mix Coffehaus Is Still Open!

We received pleasant news that The Mix Coffehaus pop up has extended their stay at 55 Bruckner Boulevard in Port Morris!

Peter served up a wicked chai latte (my go to beverage when I find myself at a Starbucks and will say that Starbucks ain’t got nothing on these guys!). The best part was that I was able to get cozy and have a nice, long conversation with some friends.

But don’t wait too long for The Mix Coffehaus will only be open until the end of January and then it’s off to find a permanent space!

Breaking News: FreshDirect Plans “Secret” Groundbreaking Ceremony in The South Bronx

#WeNeedToBreathe

It’s been almost a 3 year battle since FreshDirect sweetheart deal was announced as a done deal to dump a trucking and pollution intensive industry in the growing residential neighborhood of Port Morris directly impacting those living in the immediate area including Mott Haven. The deal would bring over 1,000 trucks and trips a day adding to an area with 8x the national rate of asthma and now FreshDirect has hit a new low.

Word has been received that the company is planning a “secret” groundbreaking at the Harlem River Yards on Monday, December 22nd at 10AM so we are calling all those who have been fighting against environmental injustice and racism to join us on this date to rally against this move.

Another Port Morris Property Sells, This Time For $32 Million

Just around the corner (literally) from 2417 Third Avenue — the loft building that is under contract for $31 million, 101 Lincoln has just sold for $32 million. This property sits across from Bruckner Bar and Grill Mott Haven Bar and Grill and according to the Real Deal the developer can build up to an 800,000 foot building on the site.

3 New Loft Buildings and Condos Coming To The South Bronx — All Market Rate

This week has been one for the books for the South Bronx. First we heard about the loft building at 2417 Third Avenue in Port Morris being under contract for $37 million, then we reported about the “Banksy” building being developed into market-rate rental apartments. Now we have 4 additional developments on the radar.

Dozens Take Part In Sneak Peak Tour of The New Randall’s Island Connector in The South Bronx

Dozens of people from all over The Bronx and the city came out today for a sneak peak tour of the new Randall’s Island Connector which will connect our borough to the 432 island park. Once the connector is completed by Summer 2015 it will provide Bronx residents with walking access onto the island which currently is only accessible from the Bronx by car via the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge (Triboro Bridge) or via Manhattan through East Harlem. This, of course, is ironic considering that The Bronx is closer to the island and only separated by 30 feet at the narrowest point by the Bronx Kill — during low-tide you can walk from The Bronx to Randall’s Island.

Another Worry For The Bronx: A Link Between Air Pollution and Adolescent ADHD

Researchers from Columbia University and elsewhere have found a possible link between air pollution and adolescent ADHD. According to the report, published today in the journal PLOS ONE, pregnant women from New York City exposed to certain air pollutants were more likely to birth a child with ADHD. The pollutants —polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)—are released into the atmosphere through the burning of coal, tobacco, and petrol.
