An Inside Look at Popular Batman-Based TV Drama ‘Gotham’ Filming In The Bronx

For the last couple of days, Welcome2TheBronx has had the pleasure of checking out the set and filming of the popular Fox TV Crime Drama ‘Gotham’ based on the Batman franchise.

The Old Bronx Courthouse is serving as the main location set (although we can’t tell you what the scenes are, you’ll have to find out yourself when season 2 begins next month!) with a small scene being shot behind the old Hupfel Brewery on St. Ann’s Avenue.

Hip-Hop Museum Coming To The Old Bronx Courthouse?

After No Longer Empty’s residency and exhibition at the Old Bronx Borough Courthouse, ‘When You Cut Into The Preset The Future Leaks Out’, and over 6,000 visitors—over 75% from the area and not counting youth programs who graced the halls of this hallowed landmark—many have asked what now?

Well one possibility is that The Universal Hip Hop Museum—the only and official Hip-Hop museum chartered by the State of New York—may in fact call the Old Bronx Borough Courthouse Home. A fitting tribute given the fact that The Bronx is the birthplace of the global phenomenon that is Hip-Hop.

Kick Off LGBTQ Pride Month At The Old Bronx Courthouse This Friday With a Huge Celebration!

This Friday from 8PM to 11:30PM, join BAAD (Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance) in collaboration with No Longer Empty’s exhibition to kick off Pride month in what is being touted as the largest, “queer pride art and performance carnival The Bronx has yet seen”…along with Queer marriage vows being officiated for the first (and last) time at The Old Bronx Courthouse.

The Bronx has limited venues for the LGBTQ community to come together and this Friday may very well be the largest indoor gathering and event since The Warehouse off the Grand Concourse was open back in the 90’s.

No Longer Empty’s exhibition, ‘When You Cut Into The Present The Future Leaks Out’ isn’t just about the great artwork on display but it is also about the community engagement via the many programs surrounding the exhibition and this weekend will not disappoint with FIVE events!

Bronx Fashion Week To Benefit Children in Need

Hosted by La Bruja, this Saturday, May 9th, the event will include poetry readings and live entertainment. A percentage of the proceeds raised during the event will go to “Gift to Empower” a 501(c)(3)  (pending) organization which has helped over 4,000 Bronx children in need in the past 10 years, particularly those living in shelters, where they receive a backpack filled with school supplies for the new school year.

In the Bronx, Art Fills an Abandoned Neighborhood Landmark – Camera Obscura – Curbed NY

For a community that has only in recent years emerged from the fires, blight, and civic neglect that once scarred the South Bronx landscape, the courthouse’s reopening felt a bit like a homecoming. “It’s like they are seeing an old family member, long lost,” observed Regine Basha, who curated the exhibit for No Longer Empty. “This isn’t our building—it belongs to the community. We just set up the structures through which we could listen to the stories.”

Bronx Fashion Week 2015 Season Kicks Off At The Old Bronx Courthouse

New York, March 20, 2015 – No Longer Empty (NLE) is pleased to present When You Cut into the Present the Future Leaks Out at the Old Bronx Borough Courthouse. Curated by Regine Basha for NLE, the exhibition is one of seven projects to receive the Neighborhood Challenge Award. Built 1905–1914 and attributed to architects Michael John Garvin and Oscar Florianus Bluemner, the Courthouse, once boasting granite floors, lavish stairways, and bronze doors, remains adorned by a statue of Lady Justice. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Bronx County, the Beaux Arts-style building has been shuttered for 37 years.
