Last night was the opening exhibition of GAY at the Longwood Gallery at Hostos Community College —a very much ‘in your face body of work by 20 artists of color exploring the shift in gay culture within the past decade.
I ran into friend and fellow Bronxite Jeffrey Guard of The Bronx Arts Exchange and we were both pretty much in awe at the exhibit and frankly quite proud that we were experiencing this in the South Bronx of all places.
As part of the programming connected to the current exhibition ‘Too Young To Wed’ at the BDC, this Saturday February 1st at 7 PM the center will host ‘VERY YOUNG GIRLS’ Screening & Q+A with director Nina Alvarez and film subject Dominique.

Today, January 19th marks an important day for me and perhaps many other Bronxites. It is the one year anniversary of the opening exhibition Seis Del Sur: Dispatches from Home by Six Nuyorican Photographers.
26 year old Bronx born and raised music artist, actor and Cardinal Hayes graduate, Christopher Estrada, is definitely starting off the year right and hit the ground running. Today he released his first single and music video and in early February will begin production on ‘Heartland’, an independent film written by Bronxite Orlando Reyes.

It seems Banksy couldn’t resist the lure of the Bronx and came back to throw up on a wall across from Yankee Stadium this time a big cat (a cheetah?) with what appears to be tags adorning its body.
Like the vast majority of Banksy lovers, you probably have never walked the streets of the Bronx let alone the South Bronx. You probably thought you’d never come up here too.
Two weeks ago I was privileged enough to witness the opening night of what would be a week-long journey for 6 talented Latina artists to a sold-out crowd on most nights.
‘Soledad Speaks’ is self-described as “spoken word theater at its best,” but after coming to terms with what was presented, I find that too limiting.
Sometimes I like to change things up a bit and I’ll take a different route during my walks through my neighborhood and the Bronx.
In doing so I usually stumble upon the beauty that is right in my neighborhood waiting to be discovered.
