Bronx Student Photo Show This Thursday!

This Thursday, May 22nd will be a special day for students at Immaculate Conception School in Melrose. After months of hard work and learning, students who have been a part of this visual literacy program at the Bronx Documentary Center will be exhibiting their work. Please come and join and celebrate the wonderful work these intrepid middle school students have embarked upon since entering the program.

Breaking News: Mayor de Blasio Announces New Housing Plan – 80/20 Rule A Thing of The Past?

Mayor de Blasio just announced his ambitious housing plan with a 10 year plan to build and preserve 200,000 units of affordable housing. In his announcement he said that this will impact 500,000 New Yorkers and also be one of the solutions to address the homelessness situation. Even extreme low income families making under $25,150 will benefit from this plan — a segment that was neglected in the previous administration.

He declared that residents will not be paying 50% of their income going towards rent: something that recently showed Bronxites pay more than 50% of their income towards rent.

Boom! Health, a Bronx-based organization that is dedicated in transforming lives through health and wellness has signed a 25 year lease (with an option to purchase), taking over Brook House Furniture in the Melrose neighborhood of the borough. Once the renovations are complete, the building will also house The Bronx LGBTQ Center and Boom! Cafe.

The Bronx Is Blooming In Melrose Community Gardens

One of the things I love about living in Melrose, besides its convenient location to Manhattan as well as a small town feel in what is considered the borough’s downtown area, is the plethora of community gardens.

Although we don’t have much as far as parks go in Melrose proper (that’s another story that we’ll expand upon shortly), we have approximately a whopping 17 community gardens (by my count at least, could be more).

Crunch Fitness In Melrose At The HUB Is Hiring Personal Trainers

Crunch Fitness is finally scheduled to open towards the end of April In Melrose at the HUB inside the Opera House Hotel on 149th Street between Brook and Bergen. Xochimilco Restaurant Is Still Open!

The popular and Baron Ambrosia approved Mexican restaurant, Xochimilco is still open! Due to a major error with Verizon and Cablevision, their main number is out of order but they can still be reached at 718 402-5100.

Hopefully your thoughts of the restaurant having closed, ensued by panic had been subdued!

Legend Has It That Green Beer Was Invented In The Bronx On St Patrick’s Day in 1914!

As legend has it, green beer was invented in Melrose on 163rd Street near 3rd Avenue 100 years ago today just as our borough of the Bronx was born according to an article The Daily Meal by Editor, Joanna Fantozzi.

If the legend is true, then it is quite fitting as the Bronx is the unofficial Irish Capital of New York City!

In just over two years, the BDC has had 5 major exhibitions not only bringing the world to the Bronx but the Bronx to the world. There have been over 80 screenings followed by in depth panel discussions providing an unparalleled educational experience.

Now the Bronx Documentary Center needs you as they launch their Kickstarter campaign to fund a year’s worth of programming.
