As Brook House Furniture’s 55 years in business in Melrose draws to a close, New York’s largest furniture store will auction off the remaining inventory next Thursday, June 26th. 10% of the proceeds will go to BOOM!Health who will be taking over the building in a 25 year lease as FIRST reported by Welcome2TheBronx.

One of the reasons why so many New Yorkers voted for Mayor Bill de Blasio was that he was seen as the “anti-Bloomberg.” Among other things, people were sick and tired of Bloomberg’s endless bans and attempts to have government regulate almost every aspect of their lives. Yet, the new City Council seems to be moving in the same direction.
The New York Botanical Garden in The Bronx will be home to an amazing and unique exhibition called ‘Frida Kahlo’s Garden’ starting May 16th of 2015 through November 1st 2015.
According to NYBG, it, “…will be the first solo presentation of Kahlo’s work in New York City in more than 25 years, and the first exhibition to focus exclusively on her intense interest in the botanical world.”
I am a second generation City Islander, born a Clam Digger in 1957. My late father also grew up on City Island. I own and live in the house on City Island that my father built with his own hands. There is no one who has more emotional and nostalgic attachment to the current City Island Bridge than I. When I was a child, before the turntable function of the bridge was permanently disabled and the bridge gratings paved over, the humming of cars and trucks passing over those gratings carried down the length of City Island and, on hot summer nights, with my bedroom window open, that comforting sound would lull me to sleep.

This was a unique opportunity for Rangel to address the issues that face our borough in a debate with State Senator Adriano Espaillat and Rev Michael Walrond who are challenging him in the upcoming primary.
We are tired of politicians turning their backs on us but we don’t have to take it sitting down. That’s why I’m encouraging folks to turn their backs on Rangel and vote for Espaillat who will be appearing on BronxTalk.

It all began with a call from my mother around 3:30PM today. A cat was stuck in a tree — 5 stories high right in front of her window.
Penelope the cat had been up there for over 24 hours. Calls to animal control and the New York City Fire Department yielded no results for the residents of Christopher Court in Melrose who had been calling for help.
Residents of Christopher Court in Melrose are desperately trying to rescue their pet cat who climbed out and up 5 stories up a tree.
The cat has been stuck for over 24 hours and various city agencies have said they can’t do anything including Captain Luisi of the 44th Ladder.
Residents are hoping for the best.
NYC & Company, New York City’s marketing and tourism agency has selected the screening of El Barrio Tours: Gentrification in East Harlem as one of the ‘Things To Do’ for the week of June 11th – June 17th. The screening, followed by a panel discussion on gentrification and as it pertains to the Bronx. The event is free and open to the public and is hosted by the film’s creator, Andrew Padilla and Welcome2TheBronx at The Bronx Museum of the Arts this Friday, June 13th from 6:30PM to 9PM.
