In the Meatpacking District, people can grab a seat and buy healthy prepared food from a vendor in a bustling plaza. But New Yorkers who live in less affluent neighborhoods tend not to have the same options — at least not yet. A new effort aims to bring several vendors to a plaza under construction in the South Bronx.

Last year, on October 21st, the infamous street artist known as Banksy struck in the Melrose neighborhood of The Bronx on E 153rd Street (just down the block from me) where Elton and 3rd Avenues meet prompting thousands of fans to trek to the area and catch a glimpse of his controversial ‘Ghetto 4 Life’ piece. The 4 story buildings have been vacant for decades (close to 30 years) with the exception of the retail spaces on the ground floor. Now the owner is beginning the process of converting the top 3 floors into market rate residential units.
Orva Shoes, a popular Manhattan-based footwear retailer, is moving in adjacent to Carter’s Children (which is scheduled to open this month) right in the Hub, the retail heart of Melrose and the South Bronx — an area that sees over 250,000 people a day.
Boston Market has signed a ten year lease for a 2,600 square foot ground floor space at Triangle Plaza in Melrose on 149th Street which is currently under construction.
The $35 million Triangle Plaza is slated to finish construction by Spring of 2015 and already Metropolitan College of New York is on board to move its headquarters to the development and occupying the upper level and a Fine Fare supermarket will be located at Triangle Plaza as well.

The College of New Rochelle in Melrose at 332 East 149th Street between Courtlandt and Morris Avenues has put its 50,000+ square foot, 9 story campus / office building for sale with an asking price of $10.5 million (the former location of the old Savemart electronic store for you history buffs).
Over the past several years, noticeable changes have happened in the Hub along 3rd Avenue or ‘La Tercera’ as it is affectionately known by the Puerto Rican community, who were the first latinos to settle the area, and now simply the Latino community at large.
Late this summer we saw the opening of the luxury boutique on 149th Street —the first of its kind in the entire borough of the Bronx (bringing a Crunch Fitness with it). There were naysayers that such a venture would just not work but on the contrary, it’s had a very successful run in such a short time.
Back in mid-August, the Opera House Hotel opened its doors in Melrose as the Bronx’s first luxury boutique lodging of its kind. Many residents were excited about such a place opening up in the Bronx let alone the South Bronx. Others were skeptical and were in the opinion that no one would want to stay in the neighborhood.
This past Monday the German based international food market, Aldi, opened its fifth New York City store (and second Bronx location) in Melrose on 3rd Avenue in the former space occupied by Staples between 154th and 155th Streets.
Directly across the street from the Opera House Hotel will rise a new mixed-use development that promises to bring 191 permanent jobs to the neighborhood along with 151 construction jobs.
Called Triangle Plaza Hub and once completed will house a campus for Metropolitan College, a Fine Fare supermarket as well as provide new retail opportunities for the area.
Put on your dancing shoes and head over to the Roberto Clemente Plaza in the Hub on 3rd Avenue and 149th Street!
Tonight at 6PM, the Bronx born and raised Puerto Rican salsero, Willie Colón, will perform at a free outdoor concert to the delights of many.
