Melrose—and The Bronx—just added it’s second luxury boutique hotel as The Umbrella opened officially on Wednesday and Welcome2TheBronx was on site for the official tour of this finished gem.
From the moment you walk into the hotel, you immediately notice it is a very space and unlike The Opera House Hotel where its luxury finishes and decor are more traditional, The Umbrella Hotel went for a sleek, modern look.
After six years of filings with NYC’s Department of Buildings and construction delays, 500 Exterior Street is rising with the 11 story hotel slated to be completed sometime in 2016 and Holiday Inn Express has leased the building according to owner Harshad Patel. The property sits across from the Special Harlem River Waterfront District where a proposed waterfront park would go along with 4,000 units of housing (2.8 million square feet of housing, 2.3 million square feet of commercial space, 1 million square feet of community space).
Another hotel is rising in The Bronx, this time in Castle Hill at 2338 Bruckner Boulevard. The Days Inn Hotel, which is scheduled to open some time next year, will have 60 rooms, a conference/meeting room for business travelers and a breakfast / lounge room for guests.
But some local residents are not happy with the location of the hotel, fearing it would turn into another hot sheet motel like the infamous Capri Motel which recently shuttered its doors and is now serving as a homeless shelter.
While the well-established and world-renowned Marriott Hotel chain seems to be having problems and delay after delay in opening its first Bronx hotel in the East Bronx, developers are taking advantage of the transportation rich neighborhoods of Melrose and Mott Haven.
Welcome2TheBronx has just learned from our friends over at YIMBY that plans have been filed for a 75 room luxury hotel at 335 Grand Concourse and East 140th Street.
Melrose and The South Bronx are experiencing a boom in the hotel industry.
First the luxury boutique Opera House Hotel opened on 149th street between Brook and Bergen and now coming this fall is the Umbrella Hotel. Located at 681 Elton Avenue between E 153rd & E 154th Streets right off 3rd Avenue, the 7 story building will house 56 rooms with rates varying from $129 – $159 per night said one of the owners and Bronxite, Manny Chadah of AMG Elton LLC.
