Tonight at the Andrew Freedman Home from 6pm to 9pm ‘La Lucha II DOM & HTI: Visions of Tomorrow, One Island’ opens up and continues the conversation it began earlier this year on the complex relationship between two countries that have similar shared histories and an island: Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Robert Reid, National Geographic Travel’s ‘Offbeat Observer’ just published a wonderful article on The Bronx and The Grand Concourse.
In the article he writes:
“The man with graying dreadlocks raking outside a New York mansion is hip-hop pioneer Kool DJ Herc. He hasn’t switched careers, but is an artist-in-residence helping out at the Andrew Freedman Home, a one-time “country club” retirement home that’s now a workspace for graffiti artists, a 1920s-styled bed-and-breakfast, and space for homegrown art and theater. Up the street, a yoga class is under way outside Edgar Allan Poe’s 200-year-old cottage. Farther south, the intricate Beaux Arts façade of the 1913 Opera House, where Houdini once did tricks, is a newly opened hotel that fancies itself “boutique.” All 60 rooms are full, and staff advise guests to dine next door at the tiny Mexicozina taqueria, a neatly converted shrine of devotion to poblano specialties (like the best pig-ear tacos in town).
Few visitors to New York will have seen this. Nor have, to be honest, most New Yorkers. The reason is location.
This is the Bronx.”
Yesterday evening participating photographers and artists of the Bronx Artist Documentary Project met for a meet and greet at the Andrew Freedman Home. This was the first time that almost all 100 members gathered since the project began last year.
When the Bronx Artist Documentary Project launches its exhibition in September, it will be the culmination of 30 photographers documenting 78 Bronx visual artists in the midst of their individual and unique creative processes.
Although The Bronx has inspired fashion around the globe, particularly in urban design, gave the world some of the most recognized labels such Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, it is often overlooked as place to hold a major fashion event.
All that is changing this year as the first ever Bronx Fashion Week will be held at the Andrew Freedman Home from Sept 5th to the 7th featuring a wide range of designers focusing on high end fashion.
Melrose and The South Bronx are experiencing a boom in the hotel industry.
