‘Bronx Narratives’ Screening Tomorrow at The Mix Coffehaus Followed By Poetry Readings

Tomorrow, Saturday, January 31st from 1-4pm join The Mix Coffeehaus as they welcome photographer and film producer Dondre Green who will be screening his latest work, ‘Bronx Narratives’.

After the event, several poets will hold a poetry reading and then the mic will be open for any poets out there who want to get up and spit some lyrics for the crowd.

Blackie: A Story of a Bronx Boy and His Dog

Blackie had come into the family before I was born, while my parents were still living in Brooklyn. Soon after my folks moved to the Bronx, Blackie ran away. My parents combed the neighborhood looking for her and put signs up on lampposts, but to no avail. A week later, a former Brooklyn neighbor called my mother and told her that Blackie was sitting on the kitchen floor in the old, still empty Brooklyn apartment, whimpering. My father wanted to leave her there, but Mom made him drive to Brooklyn to bring her back.

States With Weak Gun Laws & High Gun Ownership Have Higher Gun Related Deaths New Report Shows

A new study reveals that there appears to be a correlation with states with high gun ownership and high gun related deaths with Alaska leading the nation per capita and New York State has the 3rd lowest rate of gun related deaths in the country. “A number of previous studies have linked gun laws and gun ownership with deaths by gun violence, challenging the “more guns, less crime” hypothesis that suggests a higher rate of gun ownership makes communities safer. “

The Bronx Will No Longer Have NYC’s ONLY Intake Center For The Homeless; Borough Still Highest Contributor To City’s Homeless Population

The Bloomberg administration spent $65 million in new intake facility in The Bronx on 151st Street back in 2011 making it the only place the city’s homeless population could come to seeking a place to stay.

Now, the de Blasio administration is doing away with such failed policies by creating a second facility in Brooklyn which is scheduled to open sometime this Spring.

In 2014, 37% of the city’s homeless population had their last residence in The Bronx and combined with Brooklyn, both boroughs accounted for a whopping 65% of the homeless population.

The Bronx Remembers: 70 Years Ago Today, Auschwitz Survivors Were Liberated

January 27th, 1945, approximately 200,000 jewish concentration camp survivors of Auschwitz were liberated by Soviet soldiers. Many spread out across the globe with a number finding freedom in The Bronx amongst their mishpocheh (Yiddish for family — a term also often times attributed to extended family and friends).

UPDATE: NYC Subway & Buses Shutting Down at 11PM TONIGHT; Coastal Flood Warning For Bronx

The MTA finds itself, once again, shutting down its entire network again as winter storm Juno bears down on the Northeast. Make sure you get home before then or find yourself in a secure location if you’re not able to make it home in time.

Beginning at 11PM, ALL MTA SUBWAY LINES AND BUSES WILL BE SHUT DOWN as well as commuter rail lines, on Metro North and the LIRR.
