Boogie on the Boulevard is Back This Year—And It’s BIGGER!

The Grand Concourse, the boulevard of dreams which ties all Bronxites together and is the spine of The Bronx, was once closed on Sundays from 1991-1996 thanks the visionary leadership of then Borough President Fernando Ferrer along with Transportation Alternatives.

Last year, residents and local community based organizations alike, including The Bronx Museum of The Arts and Transportation Alternatives banded together to revive the popular event.

In 2014 we just got a few blocks from 165th Street to 167th Street for just 3 Sundays but this year we’re getting 8 blocks for 3 Sundays on August 2nd, 9th, and 16th from Noon to 12PM!

42 Years Ago Today The Third Avenue El Took Its Last Ride

Although long gone from our borough, the Third Avenue El continues to live in the consciousness of Bronxites near and far.

42 years ago today, the Third Avenue El ran for the last time and eventually dismantled leaving parts of Melrose without access to the subway and swaths of Morrisania, Tremont and other areas it ran through without any service at all. ReThinkNYC’s Ambitious Regional Plan Seeks to Expand La Guardia Airport Into The Bronx—Well Sort Of

ReThinkNYC has submitted a massive regional proposal to improve access to La Guardia Airport (LGA) as part of a competition to modernize NYC’s 4 area airports in which the winner would fetch a $500,000 prize.

In short, the proposal seeks to essentially wipe out about half of the existing Port Morris neighborhood east of the RFK Bridge and adding a convention center, parking, terminals and rail links straight into an expanded La Guardia Airport that would take over Riker’s Island as well.

The Bronx is Buggin’ — Study Shows Borough Has Most Diverse Microbes In NYC’s Subway System

As most native New Yorkers, we tend to often not think about all the germs, microbes, and fauna that coats the subways and bus system we ride daily and depend on. We’re in such denial about them that it’s like breathing — we don’t think about it.

A new study from conducted Weill Cornell Medical College now reveals, that after 18 months of swabbing and collecting samples at every single subway station in New York City (except 2 in Brooklyn which were closed), The Bronx has the most diverse microbes in the entire system. But no need for alarm since most are not considered a danger with only 12% in that category but even then, researchers claimed there wasn’t enough of them for concern.

For some time now, Richard and I had been discussing the poor transit options in the West Bronx and the vacuum left behind when the Third Avenue El was ripped, leaving a hole in Morrisania straight up to Fordham forcing millions to make do with buses and transfers leading to longer commutes.

New Metro North And Office Buildings on 149th Street Over The Railyards?

The 149th Street bridge over Metro North, between Lincoln Hospital, The Bronx Post Office, and Hostos Community College is currently a wasted potential.

Both north and south of the bridge, there is a great potential to do the same that is being done at the Hudson Rail Yards and possibly build much needed affordable housing on it with office towers on either side of the bridge.
