The Bronx Is Beautiful

Welcome To The Bronx: The Bronx Tourism Council’s 2015 Visitors Guide Is Out

Just got a chance to look at the first ever The Bronx 2015 Visitors Guide by The Bronx Tourism Council and I must say they did a pretty good job. Of course not all of our neighborhood favorites made it to the list but nevertheless it’s pretty comprehensive and highlights many of our treasures big and small and off the beaten path ones too.

The guide highlights all corners of our beautiful borough from our greenways, landmarks, cultural attractions and culinary delights to the natural beauty of The Bronx.

Irish Americans And The Bronx: More Than St. Patrick’s Day

Bronx Irish Americans: American Irish History in the Bronx

The Bronx being The Bronx, has always been home to many groups of people and that includes our Irish family here in The Bronx.

In Woodlawn, which is one of the largest Irish communities in New York City is also home to many who have settled straight from the old country back in Ireland.

Experience The Magic of Orchid Evenings At The New York Botanical Garden

This past Saturday was the launch of what’s become a yearly tradition with The Orchid Show at The New York Botanical Garden — Orchid Evenings.

It was my mother’s birthday so what better way to celebrate it than surrounded by the elegance of The Orchid Show: Chandeliers in the enchanting and historic Enid A. Haupt Conservatory during the magic of the night?

Brunch With Mama Tanya To Benefit ‘Libertad Urban Farm’, Sunday, March 15th

If you know Tanya Fields, you know that she knows food and she knows how to throw down some good ol’ fashioned cooking. If you REALLY know her then you know that she’s also an outstanding singer (rumor has it that she’ll be singing at this fundraising brunch). But if you REALLY, REALLY know Tanya, then you know that she walks the talk and is one our borough’s leaders in food justice, environmental justice and so many social issues impacting our communities.

That is why on Sunday, March 15th, Tanya Fields, affectionately known as Mama Tanya, along with her organization, ‘The BLK Projek” will be hosting a ‘Brunch With Mama Tanya’ (I got my ticket, do you?!)

‘Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden, Life’ — A Sneak Peek at What to Expect

When we found out last June that an exhibition on Frida Kahlo was coming to The New York Botanical Garden, May 16th, 2015 couldn’t get here fast enough. Now, we’re just a little over 2 months away from opening weekend and thanks to NYBG, we’re happy to share more about this event.

After reading the calendar of events, Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden, Life is massive with its programming surrounding the actual exhibition which includes over a dozen of her works, many of which are from private collections, live music and dancing giving us a colorful range of the performing arts, family events and so much more! We’ve put it all together here so that you can plan in advance for these events (especially for those who are traveling into NYC just to experience the exhibition and The Bronx!)

The Orchid Show Returns to The New York Botanical Garden

America’s “largest curated show featuring orchids” returns to the New York Botanical Garden for its 13th year at the historic Victorian-style Enid A. Haupt Conservatory — both a New York City landmark and a National one as well as the largest of its kind in the country — all right here in our beautiful Bronx.

The Orchid Show: Chandeliers runs from February 28th – April 19th with a special sneak preview for members on Friday, February 27th from 10am – 6pm.

The exhibition , is a departure from the previous exhibitions as this time the splendor of these plants aren’t just confined to the seasonal exhibition wing of the grand greenhouse but will also flow to the other main galleries of the building.

Old Bronx Courthouse to Open to Community on Tuesday, February 24th

Join No Longer Empty this Tuesday, February 24th from 12PM – 2:30PM for the “Community Open House and Unveiling of the Old Bronx Courthouse”.

“The event is organized as an opportunity for community members to learn about No Longer Empty’s upcoming art exhibition at the Old Courthouse called “When You Cut Into the Present, the Future Leaks Out” (April 23-July 2015) curated by Regine Basha, and to identify opportunities to collaborate with neighboring socially-and-culturally engaged organizations on ancillary programming and events.”

City Islanders, Friends Pack The Alehouse to Celebrate Curbed Neighborhood Cup Victory

From the size of the crowd at the City Island Alehouse Saturday, Feb.7th, you’d think that they were giving away free food.

Oops! …they were.

Despite the snow, ice and frigid temperatures, City Islanders and their friends came by the hundreds to eat, drink and rock and roll, all in celebration of City Island winning the 2014 Curbed Cup Neighborhood of the Year award, sponsored by Curbed, a prominent online magazine serving the real estate industry.
