Neighborhoods
The Bronx and its neighborhoods (except City Island of course) are the only ones in New York City located on the mainland of the continental United States.
In 1874 in what is today the borough of The Bronx, the lands West of The Bronx River seceded from Westchester County and became part of the ever-growing New York City metropolis and by 1895, what we know today as the East Bronx, East of the Bronx River were annexed from Westchester and into New York County which in essence made our borough the FIRST borough a full 3 years before Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island decided to join the party.
Many of our neighborhoods take their names from the towns and villages that once dotted the Boogie Down Bronx.
