Announced at a press conference today, The Bronx (along with Brooklyn) will be the home of a new development of New York City’s first senior housing development with services benefiting the elder LGBT community.
The 82 unit Crotona Senior Residences will be developed by NYC Housing and Preservation, HELP USA, NY State Homes along with Community Renewal and SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders).
Join us tomorrow, Wednesday June 15th from 5PM to 7PM as Bronx Academy of Art and Dance (BAAD) hosts a vigil, ‘The Bronx to Orlando With Love’, on the steps of The Bronx County Courthouse in memory of the victims of the LGBTQ massacre at Pulse nightclub in Orlando in the early hours of this past Sunday.
Maybe you’ve been to The New York Botanical Gardens or maybe it’s your first time but when you arrive at the gates just as the sun is setting and twilight sets upon the land, there is just a hint of magic in the air making you fall in love with the place.
New York City Councilman James Vacca, aka Jimmy to his constituents and those who know him, has come out of the closet and declared himself a gay man.
Vacca said in a tweet, “After talking w/ my friends & family I’ve decided to come out publicly as a gay man. Now back to the Golden Girls! #outandproud #comingout” in his courageous announcement now makes a total of 7 New York City Council members that are publicly out identifying as gay.
These past few years, the transgender community (the oft-overlooked T in LGBTQ) has been getting more and more attention in the spotlight as individuals like Laverne Cox of Orange Is The New Black fame and formerly Bruce Jenner of Olympic medal-winning fame turned Kardashian superstar who transitioned into Caitlyn Jenner earlier this year.
But that is the “glamorous” side of this community.
Kim Watson, a Bronx woman and “unrelenting advocate of the LGBT community in The Bronx,” can stay right here in her home with her family in our borough after being threatened with deportation back to her native Barbados where she feared going back.
For 3 years now, The Bronx LGBTQ community has been without a place to call home but now that’s all set to change as BOOM!Health is partnering up with Councilman Ritchie Torres in creating such a new space for Bronxites. Click to take the community survey!
Medical, mental, and social care for the Bronx’s LGBTQ community took a giant leap forward.
This past Friday, BOOM!Health opened its doors to the public as the non-profit began the process of consolidating its Bronx offices under one roof at the former Brook House Furniture building across from the Old Bronx Courthouse.
This Friday from 8PM to 11:30PM, join BAAD (Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance) in collaboration with No Longer Empty’s exhibition to kick off Pride month in what is being touted as the largest, “queer pride art and performance carnival The Bronx has yet seen”…along with Queer marriage vows being officiated for the first (and last) time at The Old Bronx Courthouse.
The Bronx has limited venues for the LGBTQ community to come together and this Friday may very well be the largest indoor gathering and event since The Warehouse off the Grand Concourse was open back in the 90’s.
