Bronx Irish Americans: American Irish History in the Bronx
The Bronx being The Bronx, has always been home to many groups of people and that includes our Irish family here in The Bronx.
In Woodlawn, which is one of the largest Irish communities in New York City is also home to many who have settled straight from the old country back in Ireland.
No Longer Empty, the organization which transformed the Andrew Freedman Home 3 years ago into a major exhibition, is in search for volunteers for their latest project, this time at the Old Bronx Courthouse.
The exhibition, ‘When You Cut Into The Present, The Future Leaks Out’, will run from April 23rd through the end of July and feature many Bronx artists as well as artists from beyond our borders bringing what will be an amazing art-filled cultural adventure through what has been one of the most beautiful, yet enigmatic vacant structures in The Bronx.
Australian film director Baz Luhrmann came to The Bronx yesterday for a press conference at The Ghetto Film School in Port Morris along with Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr and New York City Film Commissioner Cynthia Lopez to discuss his latest project, ‘The Get Down’ heading to Netflix.
The focus of the press conference was to talk more about the television series, which has captured the attention of Bronxites all over the world who lived during the era of the 1970s which the series is set in. Baz Luhrmann said of ‘The Get Down’, “It is about a group of teenagers and it’s specifically about a very intense friendship with two guys and there’s a girl involved.”

The community has been battling to save the landmark PS 31 aka ‘The Castle on The Concourse’ ever since we found that the city wanted to demolish this beloved treasure.
The City testified saying that it couldn’t withstand more storms and was a public hazard and YET 2 brutal winters have passed SINCE the June 2013 hearings at Community Board 1, PS 31 is STILL standing and is in the same condition.
A SECOND casting call has been issued for Netflix and Baz Luhrmann’s new series on the 1970s South Bronx, ‘The Get Down’. This time, interested parties can audition live in The Bronx at the Ghetto Film School at 79 Alexander Avenue, #41A.
Call time is at 11AM this Friday, March 6 and once again, the casting company is seeking African and Latino males and females between the ages of 18-21 and you can find out their requirements here.
So it seems the noise we made about making sure Netflix and Baz Luhrmann get their new series about the South Bronx set in the 1970s, ‘The Get Down’ accurate is off to a decent start by issuing a casting call to Bronx residents — which has a deadline of March 10, 2015.

Some of you may already know your Bronx history, especially if you’ve read our Bronx Facts we’ve been compiling since last year but since today’s a holiday why not talk a little more about our borough’s place in history.
In October of 2011, after almost two years from being calendared for consideration, of community meetings, historical studies, and testimonies from residents, homeowners and landlords alike, the New York City Landmarks Commission created the Grand Concourse Historic District stretching from 153rd Street and the Grand Concourse, all the way up to 167th Street.
Now, over 3 years later since that designation, the terracotta colored street signs with white lettering which mark a historic district, are finally being installed with signs at 161st Street and Grand Concourse and west on 161st and Walton.
It’s already here. With a little less than two years until the next presidential election, potential candidates are slowly coming onto the scene and although Hillary Rodham Clinton hasn’t officially announced her candidacy, she’s already amassing an army of a team and is reportedly seeking office space in Brooklyn and Long Island City in Queens.
But why not The Bronx?
