Welcome2TheBronx has just learned from an employee at a local Bronx Courthouse that both Bronx Housing Court and Bronx County Hall of Justice have tested positive for Legionella the bacteria which causes Legionnaires’.
A New York City Department of Health official has confirmed the story with Welcome2TheBronx and has added that both buildings’ cooling towers where the bacteria was found have been cleaned and disinfected.

We’ve been through this before in The Bronx. We all know if this were happening in Manhattan, perhaps on the Upper East Side or any area below 96th Street, there would be more action and faster results than we are getting, but we’re not.

Just days after NYC Department of Health announced a Legionnaires’ outbreak in the South Bronx, New York City’s Office of Emergency Management is rolling out its mobile office to The Bronx, tomorrow, August 4th. The Mobile office will be deployed throughout the 5 boroughs over the month of August to educate New Yorkers on preparing for emergencies and will also distribute literature on Legionnaires’ Disease.
With a 4th death, along with additional sites having been identified as contaminated with Legionella—the bacteria that causes Legionnaires disease—and additional cases of individuals who have contracted the infection, tonight’s Town Hall meeting at The Bronx Museum from 6PM – 8PM on the issue is going to have to answer a lot of questions.

New York City has contacted Welcome2TheBronx to help spread the news of a Town Hall on the recent outbreak of Legionnaires’ Disease in The South Bronx. The meeting will be held on Monday, August 3rd at The Bronx Museum from 6PM – 8PM where community leaders, health department medical professionals and city officials will come together so we can learn more about this disease and how NYC is making sure our communities are safe.
It is IMPORTANT to attend this meeting so that you may make your voices heard about any concerns regarding this recent outbreak, the second such this year in The Bronx.
Melrose appears to be the epicenter of the Legionnaires’ outbreak as it has been found at Lincoln Hospital, Concourse Plaza Multiplex, and now the luxury boutique Opera House Hotel.
The hotel’s management stated that none of the cases of individuals infected with the disease stayed at the hotel.
Welcome2TheBronx has also received word from National Amusements that due to Legionella—the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ Disease—being found in the theater’s cooling system, will be shut down until further notice.

The New York City Department of Health has just released a statement that there is an outbreak of Legionnaire’s disease in The South Bronx. So far, 31 people have been diagnosed with it and investigations are underway as to whether or not two recent deaths may be related to this outbreak since July 10th.
For two years now, Bronx resident Victor Maldonado of Melrose and his fellow residents have been organizing to create a community garden on 159th Street between St Ann’s and Eagle Avenues.
Currently known as Hill Street Community Garden, “The lot has been sitting there as an eyesore for years now, ” said Maldonado who is now petitioning NYC Department of Transportation, Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo, and State Senator Ruben Diaz to push for this dream to become a reality.
Thanks to community residents from Port Morris and Mott Haven in The South Bronx—along with local institutions, community based organizations and businesses—the vision for a sustainable waterfront and access to it by local residents has taken one leap closer to becoming reality and as soon as a 2017 groundbreaking.
The Grand Concourse, the boulevard of dreams which ties all Bronxites together and is the spine of The Bronx, was once closed on Sundays from 1991-1996 thanks the visionary leadership of then Borough President Fernando Ferrer along with Transportation Alternatives.
Last year, residents and local community based organizations alike, including The Bronx Museum of The Arts and Transportation Alternatives banded together to revive the popular event.
In 2014 we just got a few blocks from 165th Street to 167th Street for just 3 Sundays but this year we’re getting 8 blocks for 3 Sundays on August 2nd, 9th, and 16th from Noon to 12PM!
