As our beloved Bronx institution The New York Garden celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, they will be doing so by starting out with the 14th Annual Orchid Show next month.
If you’ve ever been to the Orchid Show, you know that up with The Holiday Train Show (which is still running until January 18th so you still have time!), it’s one of the most exciting times at NYBG as thousands of orchids are artfully arranged for all to enjoy and see one of nature’s most beautiful creations.
Today was a special day in The Bronx at Joyce Kilmer Park on 161st Street and The Grand Concourse. Local school children gleefully joined residents, elected officials, NYC Parks employees to celebrate the millionth tree which was planted last month at the park as part of the MillionTreesNYC program initiated by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
When the millionth tree was planted last month at the park, it was 2 years ahead of schedule as 2017 was the target date for completion of the project to green up New York City—especially the areas which lacked greenery and green streets such as The South Bronx where the ceremony took place.
The Bronx actually received the 2nd most number of trees with a total of 276,600 adding to the greenest of the five boroughs of New York City. Queens received the highest number of trees but only by a little over 8,000 more trees at 284,755.
“The first plant that changed my life was a tomato,” says Karen Washington, a black urban farmer in the Bronx. “It was the one fruit that I used to hate.” But after watching one that she’d grown shift in hue from green to yellow to red and taking a bite of it, she was instantly hooked. “When I tasted that tomato, when it was red and it was ripe, and I picked it off the vine, [it]…changed my world because I never tasted anything so good, so sweet. I wanted to grow everything.”
For a quarter century, all manner of trees and flowers, fruits and vegetables, have thrived across abandoned lots in the Bronx because of Washington. Deemed “the queen of urban farming,” she’s an African-American woman who’s dedicated her life to greening New York City’s poorest borough. Since 1985, Washington has assisted dozens of neighborhoods build their own community gardens, taught workshops on farming and promoted racial diversity in agriculture.”
Last year when we first got wind that The New York Botanical Garden was planning a Frida Kahlo exhibition we knew it was going to be big—but never imagined how big.
When we wrote about the show coming, a full year before it was scheduled to open, tens of thousands of people flooded our servers and shared our posts in excitement that this was happening and that it was happening in The Bronx.
The Melrose community of The Bronx has the highest concentration of community gardens in our borough with 18 (and growing) and in all of NYC.
Tomorrow, Saturday August 22nd from 10:00AM to 3:30PM you’ll be able to go on a guided tour of 3 of these gardens with entertainment and cooking demonstrations along the way.
For two years now, Bronx resident Victor Maldonado of Melrose and his fellow residents have been organizing to create a community garden on 159th Street between St Ann’s and Eagle Avenues.
Currently known as Hill Street Community Garden, “The lot has been sitting there as an eyesore for years now, ” said Maldonado who is now petitioning NYC Department of Transportation, Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo, and State Senator Ruben Diaz to push for this dream to become a reality.
Thanks to community residents from Port Morris and Mott Haven in The South Bronx—along with local institutions, community based organizations and businesses—the vision for a sustainable waterfront and access to it by local residents has taken one leap closer to becoming reality and as soon as a 2017 groundbreaking.

Frida Kahlo has finally arrived in The Bronx.
Yesterday, we were treated to a special media preview for The New York Botanical Garden’s ‘Frida Kahlo: Art-Garden-Life’ exhibition—after 11 months of its announcement—and all that anticipation and build up was well worth the wait.
This week I decided to take a quick trip to check out all the cherry blossoms and various trees, as well flowers that were blooming at The New York Botanical Garden and I surely wasn’t disappointed.
With weekend temps in the 60’s and mostly clear skies, it’s going to be a perfect time to head over to NYBG and enjoy the various areas of the garden, including Cherry Valley which is just exploding with beautiful blossoms.
This past Saturday was the launch of what’s become a yearly tradition with The Orchid Show at The New York Botanical Garden — Orchid Evenings.
It was my mother’s birthday so what better way to celebrate it than surrounded by the elegance of The Orchid Show: Chandeliers in the enchanting and historic Enid A. Haupt Conservatory during the magic of the night?
When we found out last June that an exhibition on Frida Kahlo was coming to The New York Botanical Garden, May 16th, 2015 couldn’t get here fast enough. Now, we’re just a little over 2 months away from opening weekend and thanks to NYBG, we’re happy to share more about this event.
After reading the calendar of events, Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden, Life is massive with its programming surrounding the actual exhibition which includes over a dozen of her works, many of which are from private collections, live music and dancing giving us a colorful range of the performing arts, family events and so much more! We’ve put it all together here so that you can plan in advance for these events (especially for those who are traveling into NYC just to experience the exhibition and The Bronx!)
