So much for Baz Lurhmann’s casting call seeking African American or Latino males.
The Bronx and Hip Hop community has been abuzz about Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix series ‘The Get Down’, due out in August 2016, ever since it was first announced several months ago. Most of the chatter was whether or not outsiders would get our story right (Welcome2TheBronx was the first to raise this issue) and now it seems we may have been right: Not one Latino cast member was introduced this week.
Kicking off the 16th Annual Havana Film Festival in New York, The Bronx Museum will host a screening of Rumba Clave Blen Blen Blen, followed by a special performance by Dayramir Gonzalez & Habana enTrance. New York, March 20, 2015 – No Longer Empty (NLE) is pleased to present When You Cut into the Present the Future Leaks Out at the Old Bronx Borough Courthouse. Curated by Regine Basha for NLE, the exhibition is one of seven projects to receive the Neighborhood Challenge Award. Built 1905–1914 and attributed to architects Michael John Garvin and Oscar Florianus Bluemner, the Courthouse, once boasting granite floors, lavish stairways, and bronze doors, remains adorned by a statue of Lady Justice. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Bronx County, the Beaux Arts-style building has been shuttered for 37 years.
Tomorrow, Friday, March 6 from 5:30PM – 9:30PM, you’ll get TWO art openings under one roof as the BxArts Factory launches their first exhibition called ‘Innuendos: The Voices of 10 Bronxite Women’, and the Andrew Freedman Home Artists in Residence II Annual Art Exhibition featuring 15 artists and their works.
So it seems the noise we made about making sure Netflix and Baz Luhrmann get their new series about the South Bronx set in the 1970s, ‘The Get Down’ accurate is off to a decent start by issuing a casting call to Bronx residents — which has a deadline of March 10, 2015.
When we found out last June that an exhibition on Frida Kahlo was coming to The New York Botanical Garden, May 16th, 2015 couldn’t get here fast enough. Now, we’re just a little over 2 months away from opening weekend and thanks to NYBG, we’re happy to share more about this event.
After reading the calendar of events, Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden, Life is massive with its programming surrounding the actual exhibition which includes over a dozen of her works, many of which are from private collections, live music and dancing giving us a colorful range of the performing arts, family events and so much more! We’ve put it all together here so that you can plan in advance for these events (especially for those who are traveling into NYC just to experience the exhibition and The Bronx!)
Last night’s celebration at The Bronx Museum of the Arts for the BxArts Factory launch…
The 70s was the decade that South Bronx became the poster child for urban decline. It’s when Howard Cosell, during the 1977 World Series at Yankee Stadium told the world, “Ladies and gentlemen, The Bronx is burning,” It was the decade that our borough lost over 20% of its population (more than 300,000 had fled) — most of it concentrated in The South Bronx.
Now, coming in 2016, a new Netflix series called ‘The Get Down’ will focus on a group of teenagers during that tumultuous era and the creativity that blossomed during those days giving way to hip-hop in all its forms from the music, to the dance, the graffiti artists and much more.
Bronx and Melrose resident, Dan Hoyle will be performing pieces from his show, “Each and Every Thing” at the Bronx Documentary Center Friday, January 16th at 7:00PM.
