Don’t be fooled by the mainstream media: Arts & Culture is alive in our borough and The Bronx has been at the forefront of arts and culture for decades and isn’t something new to the borough. We’ve been creating and exporting the arts in all its disciplines as long as our borough has been around. From the founding of Hip-hop to fashion designers and major entertainment artists along with the visual and literary arts, we’ve been doing it.
Many Bronxites and artists have been talking about the new arts organization, BxArts Factory, since we made the announcement last month on the inception of the this endeavor. Now, today, in anticipation of their launch party tonight at the Bronx Museum, they’ve revealed to Welcome2TheBronx their location.
The BxArts Factory will located in the nationally landmarked Brook Avenue Gardens building on 148th Street and Brook Avenue in Mott Haven at the border of Melrose.
After 10 long years, The Bronx will finally have a permanent space for the Bronx Children’s Museum.
In Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito’s State of The City address today, she mentioned the opening of the Bronx Children’s Museum by 2017 ending an era where we are the only borough in NYC without a dedicated cultural institution for our 250,000 children under the age of 9.
It’s that time again when the Bronx Documentary Center provides free holiday portraits for the community, this time for Valentine’s Day, Saturday from 2pm-4pm.
Each couple gets 1 free 8×10 portrait (must be a Bronx resident) and each additional copies at $5.00 each. Non-Bronx residents can also get their portraits taken for $5.00 per print.
The Bronx Documentary Center is located at 614 Courtlandt Avenue at the corner of 151st Street in Melrose.
‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee is a book all of us remember as being one of the many required reading tomes during our school years. This was true whether you lived in The Bronx or across the country.
Earlier this week, The New York Times reported that over 50 years after Harper Lee’s landmark story set in racially segregated Alabama of 1930s was published, a manuscript had surfaced written by Lee and is a sequel called ‘Go Set A Watchman’ starring the many of the same characters such as Atticus Finch and Scout, this time set in the 1950s.
Growing up in The Bronx in the late 1980’s you couldn’t escape the beats and lyrics of Slick Rick’s hip-hop songs. Everywhere you went someone was either playing it on their boomboxes or you heard his songs of the relatively nascent genre on the airwaves.
The 70s was the decade that South Bronx became the poster child for urban decline. It’s when Howard Cosell, during the 1977 World Series at Yankee Stadium told the world, “Ladies and gentlemen, The Bronx is burning,” It was the decade that our borough lost over 20% of its population (more than 300,000 had fled) — most of it concentrated in The South Bronx.
Now, coming in 2016, a new Netflix series called ‘The Get Down’ will focus on a group of teenagers during that tumultuous era and the creativity that blossomed during those days giving way to hip-hop in all its forms from the music, to the dance, the graffiti artists and much more.

Bronx resident and artist, Cinnamon Willis has been keeping herself quite busy making beautiful — yet haunting — dolls between working and displaying her work from exhibition to exhibition and not least of all increasing her profile in the international world.
From its humble beginnings in the rotunda of the beautiful landmarked Bronx County Courthouse in 1971, it’s move to larger quarters in 1982 at the former synagogue at 1040 Grand Concourse, and then its expansion in 2006 when it doubled in size, The Bronx Museum of The Arts, “the little museum that could”, has become a major player in the art world on an international scale and this year will be host to the country’s largest exhibition of Cuban art.

85 years young and you can always spot her in the early morning hours running her errands. Even though she cannot walk without the aid of her walker, she does not solicit help from anyone.
BxArts Factory, the borough’s first incubator for the Arts, will officially launch on Thursday, February 12th at The Bronx Museum of the Arts. The event will be held from 6pm – 8pm and, “…will be filled with artists performing and creating art live for the audience to enjoy their craft,” says Yolanda Rodriguez Co-Founder of the organization in a press release sent to us last night.
