After dozens of projects were submitted to an open call by The Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) for the potential to transform the city, only 3 winners were selected and two are from The Bronx.  The Startup Box, a tech incubator in Hunts Point and The Boogie Down Booth at the Freeman station on the 2 and 5 subway.

According to MAS:

The Startup Box is a hybrid tech incubator and youth education prototype designed to increase opportunities for South Bronx community members. This innovative community center blends new educational models with startup business incubation in a shared training space for both high school students and entrepreneurs.

The Boogie Down Booth has created a vibrant public space in a previously forlorn area under the low and loud 2 and 5 trains in the South Bronx. Design Fellow Chat Travieso, in collaboration with the Design Trust for Public Space and the NYC Department of Transportation, designed an innovative seating area with speakers, solar power and lighting – and now, every day, people can be seen sharing music, sitting down, and enjoying this new public space.

There is an open invitation to come to listen to the 3 winners pitch their projects and we can also add our voices to help get them to the next level!

2014 Jane Jacobs Forum:
PROJECTS THAT IGNITE

A special session at the MAS Summit for NYC
Hosted by the Urbanists

Thursday, October 23, 5 – 7:30PM, at the TimesCenter

Jane Jacobs wasn’t trained as an architect. She wasn’t trained as an urban planner. But she believed in cities, and the ability of people to change them. PROJECTS THAT IGNITE will showcase three unique urban interventions, selected from dozens of projects in an open call by the MAS Urbanist leadership, with the potential to positively transform the city.

Join us on October 23. Hear each team pitch their project to a diverse panel of experts. Hear their insights. Add your voice. And help bring these innovative projects to the next level.

The TimesCenter is located at the New York Times building at:

242 W 41st St, New York, NY 10036

Congratulations on Bronx projects taking the lead!
