Yet Another Wild Animal, Once Gone From The City, Is Spotted In The Bronx

Wild animals are making a comeback in The Bronx — and not at the Bronx Zoo.

Back in April, NYPD officer Derek Lenart spotted an unfamiliar animal which turned out to be a fisher which is related to the weasel family. This was the first reported sighting of a fisher within city limits in modern history. (I guess it doesn’t count if fisher was on the menu at Baron Ambrosia’s 4th Annual Bronx Pipe Smoking Society Small Game Dinner).

In December we had the coyote who made it to Crotona Park, and let’s not forget Ted the raccoon who was stalking people in the West Bronx last year as well.

Before that we had a deer running through the Bronx and eventually caught in Marble Hill. Deer sightings have become so commonplace that the city is spending $19K this year to monitor deer population in The Bronx and Staten Island.

Remember José? No? He’s the first beaver to take up residence in New York City in 200 years and is currently living in The Bronx River with his other beaver friend, Justin (pun very much intended).

All this shouldn’t be a surprise being that the Bronx has 3 of the 10 largest parks in New York City and is the only borough attached to the mainland.

Did I miss any other wild animals lurking in The Bronx besides the skunks and wild turkeys?

With all things considered, guess this mural in Marble Hill is quite appropriate, no?
